SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara women's golf team shoots for its second consecutive team title starting Monday at the eight-team Battle at the Rock, hosted by UC Riverside at the 6,028-yard, par-72 Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.
Santa Clara will compete with Butler, Cal State Bakersfield, Idaho State, Missouri-Kansas City, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern and UC Riverside in 54 holes of golf over two days. "We are really excited to get back on the course this week," head coach Krystal Kelly said.
The Broncos will field the same team that took first place at the Cal State Northridge Matador Invitational at the beginning of the month. Santa Clara finished nine shots better than Morehead State for its second title of the 2015-16 season and seventh under Kelly.
Senior Monique Riley and sophomore Kristin Le tied for fifth at the Matador Invitational to pace the team. Annie Freman, Ashley Noda and freshman Cynthia Navis will comprise the five-player Bronco squad.
Meghan Shain, Isabella Salant and Kyleigh Moreno will compete as individuals.
"We're coming off a strong week of practice," Kelly said. "Our main goals are to stay patient, present and have fun. The more we do this, the better we play."
The tournament has special meaning for Kelly. The Broncos will be wearing special ribbons in honor of former Weber State coach Jeff Smith, who passed away suddenly. "The goal is to get the win in his honor, since he has given so much to the college golf community," Kelly said.
Team and individuals will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes in Tuesday's final round. Both days will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
