ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Battling wet and rainy conditions, the Santa Clara women's golf team entered the clubhouse Monday after the first day of competition at the Sacramento State Invitational in second place, seven shots off the lead. The Broncos navigated the 6,008-yard, par-72 Sierra View Country Club course to a 601 total.
With rounds of 300 and 301, the Broncos sit seven shots behind West Coast Conference foe San Francisco at the 15-team event, which concludes Tuesday with a single 18-hole round which is schedule to tee off at 7:45 a.m. PDT.
Individually, junior Annie Freman and sophomore Kristin Le scored identical rounds of 74 and 75, and are within striking distance of first place. They are tied for fourth at 5-over 149, four strokes behind USF's Allison Lillie.
Senior Ashley Noda is tied for 13th with five other golfers at 152 following rounds of 74 and 78.
Sophomore Isabella Salant scored rounds of 78 and 77 to rest in a tie for 27th at 11-over 155. Freshman Cynthia Navis bounced back with a career-low tying 74 in the second round to climb 27 spots on the leaderbaord. She scored an 83 in the early round and is tied for 37th at 157.
"The key for us is to keep things simple and take advantage of the birdie opportunities," explained head coach Krystal Kelly. "There are some very scoreable holes out there."
Golfers had to endure a nearly 45 minute rain delay and the final groups completed their second round just as night was falling. There will be little rest with Tuesday's final round set to tee off at 7:45 a.m. PDT. The Broncos will be in a group with USF and Nevada, starting final round play at 9:10 a.m. from the first tee box.
