WCC Golf Championships Central | WATCH: Freman, Kelly Preview Event

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara head coach Krystal Kelly likes the chances of her women's golf team at the West Coast Conference championship despite entering the event as the underdog. The three-day tournament begins Monday on the 5,995-yard, par-72 Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Calif.

In the 19-year history of the event only Pepperdine and San Francisco have been winners with the Waves capturing the crown 17 times overall, including the last 14. USF won the inaugural event in 1997 and again 2001.

The Broncos matched their highest finish ever in the championship event by capturing third-place last season and look to improve on that standing this year. The team will tee off at 9:15 a.m. Monday on the Lakeside course.

"We are ready to play this week," Kelly said. "The team looks really good. We just need to keep things simple and stick to our game plan."

All five golf playing schools will compete in the event and they are all in the top-100, according to the recent Golfstat.com rankings. BYU enters as the 38th ranked team in the country with Pepperdine also cracking the top 50 at No. 49. Santa Clara begins play ranked 93rd.

Santa Clara will lean on junior Annie Freman with hopes of breaking into the top two for the first time. Freman captured individual medalist honors and the Broncos took second place at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic two weeks ago.

Freman won two titles this year and also set program records for best 18, 36 and 54-hole scores while leading the squad with a 75.26 stroke average.

Sophomore Kristin Le was runner-up at the Cowgirl Classic and also collected an individual title along with six top-10 finishes while competing in all 10 events.

Seniors Ashley Noda and Monique Riley, and freshman Cynthia Navis complete Santa Clara's five-player team.

"We're coming off our last tournament with momentum and we are looking forward to finishing strong," Kelly added.
