Freman Wins Individual Title; Women’s Golf Fourth At Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. – Junior Annie Freman became the first women's golfer in Santa Clara history to win four individual titles after capturing the Fresno State Classic on Tuesday with a tournament 36-hole record 8-under 136. As a team the Broncos took fourth-place with a 592 (+16) total at the rain-shortened event.

After navigating the 6,217-yard, par-72 San Joaquin Country Club to a program-record 5-under 67 in Monday's first round, Freman followed with a 3-under 69 on Tuesday, holding off Fresno State's Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Boise State's Genevieve Ling, who tied for second at 5-under 139.

"Annie played great this week," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "She made 10 birdies and tee to green, she was very solid."

The event was shortened to 36 holes after rain delayed the start of play on Monday.

Freman joins Ashley Noda, winner at the Santa Clara Colby Invitational in October, and Kristin Le, Battle at the Rock winner two weeks ago, as Broncos to top the field in 2015-16 events. Freman's fourth career title also breaks a tie with Miki Ueoka, who claimed three wins during her career that ended in 2011.

Freshman Cynthia Navis did her best to lift Santa Clara to a third straight team title. Her career-low 74 on Tuesday was the next lowest score among all Broncos, however it wasn't enough. Tournament host Fresno State was an eight-shot winner over runner-up Boise State with a 577 total.

Santa Clara beat two teams ranked higher in the golfstat.com poll, including No. 95 Nevada and No. 82 New Mexico State. "This is the first time we've beaten New Mexico State in a few years," Kelly said about her 100th ranked Broncos.

"Overall, it was another great finish for the team," Kelly added. "Our scoring is becoming more consistent. I'm looking forward to seeing what the squad can do in the next few weeks."

Navis and Noda tied for 41st place at 9-over 153, while Le and Monique Riley tied for 50th at 155 (+11). Competing as an individual, Meghan Shain scored rounds of 78 and 79 to finish at 13-over 157, tied for 57th.

The Broncos are back in action at the Sacramento State Invitational scheduled to begin on Monday, March 21.
