MARICOPA, Ariz. – Junior Annie Freman shot a 4-under-par 140 to lead the 110-player field and the Santa Clara women's golf team is one-shot off the lead after the first day of competition at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic.
Freman scored identical rounds of 70 to take a two-shot lead over Nevada's Celyn Khoo into Tuesday's final round.
As a team the Broncos scored rounds of 287 and 296 for a 583 (+7) total, leaving them one-shot behind Idaho for the team lead. Freman scored nine of Santa Clara's tournament-high 29 birdies over the opening 36 holes. Santa Clara's 36-hole total is the second-best in school history, trailing only the 578 posted at the Boise State Bronco Classic on Sept. 16, 2013.
"Incredible," said head coach Krystal Kelly about her teams play on the 6,231-yard, par-72 Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club. "It was the best golf I've seen them play tee to green. I'm really proud of them."
Kristin Le is just three shots off the pace and is one of four golfers to finish the day under-par. The sophomore carded a first-round 1-under 71 and followed with an even-par 72 to sit in a third-place tie at 1-under 143.
Senior Ashley Noda is the third Bronco in the top-15 on the individual leaderboard. Noda is one of seven golfers tied for 15th at 4-over 148 following rounds of 73 and 75.
"It was fun to watch them today," Kelly added.
Santa Clara's opening round matched the best in school history. The Broncos also shot 1-under 287 in the second round of the 2013 Boise State Bronco Classic.
