SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Dominic Vegaalban converted a penalty kick in the 80th minute to lift Santa Clara men's soccer to a 1-0 win over Cal Poly in the season opener on Friday night at Stevens Stadium.
Vegaalban slotted a left-footed shot to the lower right hand corner while the Mustangs goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado dove the other way.
Moments earlier, Alejandro Barajas' penalty kick attempt was smothered by Arce-Hurtado but an infraction on the play gave the Broncos a second chance that Vegaalban stepped up to.
The Broncos (1-0) were awarded the kick when Brady Jackson was called for a handball inside the box on a shot by Oladayo Thomas. Jackson was given a red card as a result.
Santa Clara had a bevy of quality chances, including a one-on-one opportunity inside the box for Thomas midway through the first half. Julian Bravo's shot in the 36th minute hit the crossbar as the two teams entered intermission scoreless.
SCU finished with a 15-4 advantage in shots including 6-2 on frame. Both of Caden Buckley's shots were on target to lead the Broncos. Nick Giacalone and Drew Patterson each had one shot on goal for the Mustangs (0-1).
Arce-Hurtado was credited with five saves compared to three for Broncos goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet who recorded his fourth-straight clean sheet after finishing the spring with three consecutive shutout wins.
