SAN MATEO, Calif. – The 24th-ranked Santa Clara men's soccer program was recognized by the West Coast Conference on Monday when Javier Ruiz Duran was named the WCC Men's Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week along with Pacific's Erik Centeno.
Ruiz Duran assisted on Joshua Dabora's game-winning goal against Saint Mary's last Wednesday to help the Broncos take sole possession of first place WCC with a 1-0 win on the road.
The game winner came in the 55th minute when the Barcelona, Spain native slipped a pass to Dabora inside the 18 that was chipped over the Gaels goalkeeper.
In Saturday's 4-1 victory over Gonzaga, Ruiz Duran scored a brace, including the game winner, and added an assist to keep Santa Clara atop the league standings.
With the match knotted at 1-all, Ruiz Duran found the back of the net in the 61st minute when he received the pass from Tyron Kirunda and shot to the back post from a tight angle. The Bronco captain added an insurance goal in the 86th minute and then assisted on Eduardo Lopez Perez's goal in the 88th for the 4-1 margin.
It is the first such honor for Ruiz Duran and the third Bronco to be recognized this season. Dylan Bartlett was named conference offensive player of the week on September 20 and Dominic Vegaalban was recognized on October 18.
