Thomas Named WCC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

WCC Release

SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the second week in a row and the fourth time this season, the Santa Clara men's soccer program was recognized by the West Coast Conference when Oladayo Thomas was named the WCC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

Thomas scored the game winner in Saturday's WCC Championship clinching match over Portland and also tallied an assist.

The game winner came in the 49th minute with the Broncos leading 1-0.  Thomas drew a handball penalty when his shot deflected off a Portland defender's arm.  In the subsequent penalty kick, Thomas calmly found the net for his league leading ninth goal of the season to double the Santa Clara to 2-0.

After the Pilots cut the Bronco lead in half 2-1 in the 68th minute, Thomas assisted on Eduardo Lopez Perez's insurance goal in the 73rd minute to give the Broncos a two-goal cushion, 3-1.

The score would hold up giving Santa Clara its 13th WCC Championship in program history and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

It is the first such honor for Thomas and the fourth Bronco to be recognized this season.  Last week, Javier Ruiz Duran was named WCC's co-offensive player of week.  Dylan Bartlett was named conference offensive player of the week on September 20 and Dominic Vegaalban was recognized on October 18
