WASHINGTON - Oladayo Thomas continued his goal-scoring tear finding the back of the net early in the second half in Santa Clara men's soccer's 1-0 win over American University on Friday at Reeves Field.
Just a couple of minutes out of intermission in the 48th minute, Javier Ruiz Duran sent a pass from midfield to a streaking Tyrone Kirunda on the left side. The speedy Kirunda cut inside the defender and from close to the end line, sent a pass across a diving Eagles goalkeeper Lorenzo Gordon to a waiting Thomas who one-timed it into the open net.
Thomas has now scored the last three goals for the Broncos (3-0) and has tallied seven goals in the last six games dating back to last season.
The goal stood as the lone score of the game as Santa Clara's stout defense did not allow a shot by American until the 60th minute.
AU's first shot on frame came in the 68th minute by Mustapha Sowe that Broncos goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet easily cradled.
That was the only save Cases Mundet had all game as he recorded his second shutout of the season. Gordon was credited with three saves.
American's best scoring opportunity came in the closing minute of the game when Zemi Rodriguez's shot inside the 18 hit the side netting.
NOTES:
• Santa Clara is now 1-0 all-time against American University.
• The Broncos has won the first three games of the season for the first time since 2004 when they won the first seven to open the season.
• Cases Mundet has not conceded a goal in 516 minutes dating back to last spring. This fall, he recorded a clean sheet in the season opener and played the first half of the match against Sacramento State.
