PORTLAND, Ore. – All five Santa Clara women's golfers improved their scores in the second round, but it wasn't enough to move the Broncos up the team leaderboard leaving them in 11th-place after 36 holes of the Molly Invitational.
A tough start put the Broncos in a deep hole after the opening round that even a 20-stroke improvement couldn't get them out of. Santa Clara carded a 326 in the morning and shot a 306 in the afternoon to move within striking distance of a number of clubs heading into Tuesday's final round at the 6,254-yard, par-72 Waverley Country Club.
"Obviously I was disappointed after our first round," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "The girls looked a little uncomfortable out there, but they were able to settle down and bounce back for round two."
Junior Sarah Busey rebounded from an opening 82 to card the team's best round of the day with a 3-over 75 in the afternoon. She moved up 12 spots on the individual leaderboard to 42nd at 157.
Sophomore Claire Choi bettered her first-round by eight swings with a second-round 76 and senior Marni Murez improved five swings with a 77 in the afternoon. Senior Isabella Seeburger matched her season-low with second-round 78 and Duong Tran's 81 was one-shot better than her first round score.
"I'm hoping they'll use what they learned today and ultimately play fearless golf," Kelly said. "I saw too many timid swings today."
Tuesday's final round will start with tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10 at 8 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available by clicking here.
