SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Following a delay of several weeks Santa Clara women's golf finally opened its spring season carding a two-round total of 619 for 11th place after the first day of The Gold Rush.
The team was able to chisel off some rust from the extended break closing the day with a 307, five shots better than the opening round.
"Today was our first competitive round of the season so it was good to see what we are doing well and what we need to work on," head coach Krystal Kelly said.
Nine Broncos made the trip with four individuals competing as part of the B team.
Sophomore Claire Choi, who entered the clubhouse tied for 21st at 7-over 151 (76-75), led all team members.
Competing in her first event of the entire season junior Emily Sumner carded the team's low score with a second-round 1-over 73. She bounced back from an opening 80 to climb 19 spots on the leaderboard for a share of 31st.
Junior Sarah Busey ended the day at 157 (77-80) tied for 46th. Sophomore Naomi Wong totaled a 162 (79-83) and senior Marni Murez finished the day at 163 (84-79) to round out the 'A' team contingent.
The 'B' squad was led by senior Chloe Wong, who grabbed a share of 29th with a 152 total (75-77). Anne-Claire Tande (82-83), Isabella Seeburger (87-83) and Vanessa Giampaoli (90-94) all competed.
"What a special opportunity to have the entire team here to gain some experience," Kelly added.
The Broncos look for more improvement in Tuesday's final round, which gets going at 8 a.m. PT on the 6,169-yard Old Ranch Country Club. Live scoring updates are available by clicking here.
