The Gold Rush Yields 12th-Place Finish To Women’s Golf

SEAL BEACH, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf completed its first tournament of the spring season with a 938 total and a 12th- place finish at The Gold Rush.

A cancellation of the scheduled opener two weeks ago delayed the Broncos start and the team showed some rust with rounds of 312-307-319. No. 38 Georgia won the team title by 23 strokes.

"This wasn't the outcome we were looking for," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "It's now clear as to what we need to focus on for the next few weeks."

To get members of her team some tournament competition following the lengthy delay, Kelly had nine players broken up into two teams compete at the 6,169-yard Old Ranch Country Club layout in Seal Beach. "What a special opportunity to have the entire team here to gain some experience," she said.

Individually the Broncos were led by sophomore Claire Choi and senior Chloe Wong, who both finished in a tie for 29th with three other golfers at 13-over 229. Chloe Wong represented the 'B' team with the Broncos' lowest final-round score at 77.

Sarah Busey completed 54 holes at 234 (77-80-77) with Emily Sumner a shot back at 235 (80-73-82). The juniors both finished inside the top-50. Sophomore Naomi Wong (244) and senior Marni Murez (249) rounded out the 'A' team.

Competing in only her second career event and first of the entire season, junior Anne-Claire Tande carded a career-low 78 in the final-round to finish at 243. Senior Isabella Seeburger (252) and junior Vanessa Giampaoli (284) rounded out the 'B' team contingent.

Georgia's Celeste Dao captured individual medalist honors by one shot over teammate Caterina Don with a 209 total.

Next up for the Broncos is the BYU at Entrada Classic, which gets underway on March 9. The two-day tournament takes place at the Entrada Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
