SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's golf wraps up the fall season competing in an event they are quite familiar with. The Broncos will defend their team title at the Pat Lesser-Harbottle Invitational, hosted by Seattle University at 6,020-yard, par-72 Tacoma Country and Golf Club starting Monday. The 18-team field will play 54 holes of golf across two days.
The Broncos have not placed better than 10th in any of their previous three tournaments and they are looking at a return to Washington to send them into the break on a high note.
Top-10 finishes from Emily Sumner and Sarah Busey, along with top-20s from Marni Murez and Claire Choi propelled the Broncos to the team title by four swings at last year's event.
"It will be nice to have some familiarity with the course," head coach Krystal Kelly said. "It's something we haven't had yet this season."
Busey, Murez and Choi are joined by senior Chloe Wong and sophomore Naomi Wong to make up the Broncos' contingent in Tacoma this year. The Wong sisters will play as team members for the first time.
"We are looking better," Kelly noted of her squad. "This was a very tight qualifier for this tournament. We are working of developing players, so this is another great opportunity for them to challenge themselves under pressure."
Slow starts have hindered the Broncos this season and there is added pressure for a strong opening. "Weather might be an issue on Tuesday so it's going to be important to play well out of the gate," Kelly said.
The field is scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start format at 8 a.m. PT. Live scoring and stats can be accessed by clicking here.
