SAN FRANCISCO – Santa Clara women's tennis began the 2016-17 season on Thursday at the University of San Francisco's Battle in the Bay Classic. Seniors Daniella Silva and Nabila Farah represented the Broncos in the competition at the California Tennis Club.

Silva started the tournament with a decisive, upset victory over No. 4 seed Devin Chypyha of Arizona 6-0, 6-2. The senior will play in the quarterfinal round against the winner of the Maayan Sela (Pacific) and Joselyn M. Treyes Albarracin (San Francisco) on Friday at 1 p.m. PT.

Farah came up short against No. 3 seed Anna Sokiran of San Francisco, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Farah will compete in the consolation bracket on Friday at 1 p.m. PT against the loser of the Cristina Saenz de Buruaga (Pacific) and Marie Van Aeist (Arizona) matchup.

"I was very happy with Dani and Nabila's performances today," head coach Ben Cabell said. "Dani especially, she played the No. 4 seed and beat a good player from the Pac-12. So that was great way for her to start off the season. Nabila fell a little bit short but also played very well. I'm happy with the start today and look forward to some good results tomorrow."

The duo will also compete in the opening round of the doubles competition on Friday at 9:45 a.m. PT. Farah and Silva will face Arizona's Paris J. Corley and Lauren Marker, the No. 1 seed.
