Women’s Tennis Signs Gevargiz, Tabachnik

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis announced the two members of its incoming recruiting class for the 2017-18 school year on Tuesday, Elvena Gevargiz and Katya Tabachnik.

"I'm really excited for our recruiting class," head coach Ben Cabell said. "Both Elvena and Katya will make an impact on our team. I really think that they will fit in well here and be very successful. Both of them are great students and great athletes and that is what we look for in recruiting."

Gevargiz, who is 5-8 and right-handed, hails from Las Vegas and will graduate from Odyssey Charter High School. However, she did not play for her high school team but she played for the "No Quit Tennis Academy" and is a four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net. She is the No. 105 player in the nation per the website.

She is the daughter of Michael, who played soccer for the Iranian National Team and Tatiana Gevargiz. Gevargiz was able to spend some time working with Andre Agassi's father and hit several times with Steffi Graf, a former No. 1 ranked player in the world that won 22 Grand Slam titles.

"All of my family lives in The Bay Area, Gevargiz said." Since living in Las Vegas for the past 14 years, I felt it was time to go back to my original hometown. This is where I feel more connected and choosing Santa Clara is where I know I can succeed."

She will pursue a degree in business and is very excited about the opportunities for her in Silicon Valley.

Tabachnik, a 5-3 right-hander, was born in San Francisco and went to St. Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco as well. She was named team captain her senior year and was team MVP all four years of her career. She earned Western Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) Singles First-team honors and helped guide her team to a NorCal CIF Championship as well as Central Coast Section Runner-Up finish. The team went 25-2 on the year and was ranked first in the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) NorCal rankings.

Per TennisRecruiting.net, she is a five-star recruit and the No. 70 player in the nation and the 16th-best player in California.

"I chose Santa Clara because of the feel of the school," Tabachnik said. "I liked the feel of the tennis team and the location."

Tabachnik, who was a member of the President's Honor Roll in high school, is pursuing a degree in business.
