SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis will face their first Division I opponent of the 2017 dual match season this weekend at Degheri Tennis Center. The Broncos square off against Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m. on Saturday. SCU was set to play San Jose State on Friday at 1 p.m. but that match was postponed to Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. due to expected weather in the area (UPDATE: Rain has pushed the start time to 1 p.m. Saturday).

"We got two tough teams on the schedule so I think we're going to have our hands full," head coach Ben Cabell said. "It's really going to be a test to see where we're at. We need to see if our returning players can step up at the top of the lineup and if our newcomers can jump in and have some success at the bottom of the lineup."

The Broncos enter the weekend with a 1-0 record after defeating Sonoma State 5-2 last weekend in the season opener. SCU swept doubles play to claim the point and then won four of the six singles matches.

Freshman Caitlyn Frankel won on court five and has now won her last three matches as she settles into the college game. Sophomore Madison Clarke was victorious on court two and has now won her last five singles matches dating back to the fall. Senior Nabila Farah earned a victory on court three to give her a 6-6 record on the year and a two-game winning streak.

Senior Daniella Silva came up short in a long battle on court one in the season opener but will look to bounce back this weekend and set the tone for the Broncos. Junior Giannina Ong fell on court six for SCU in another close matchup that went three sets.

Cal State Fullerton is off to a 4-0 start on the year, winning at home against Nevada (5-2) and UC San Diego (7-0) then picking up two wins on the road at San Diego State (4-0) and San Diego (4-3).

"It's going to be challenging but I think we know that and we are ready for it," Cabell said.
