Broncos Have Big Opening Day On The Links At USF Intercollegiate

SAN FRANCISCO - Behind an outstanding first day out from newcomers Viraj Garewal, Julien Paltrinieri and Eugenio Bernanrdi, Santa Clara men's golf is sitting in a great position after two rounds of play at the USF Invitational held at the Olympic Club. The Broncos are currently third in the team standings behind only BYU and Little Rock.

Santa Clara shot a combined 1-over 283-286--569 and are nipping on the heels of the leaders BYU (567) and Little Rock (569). The biggest reason behind that success is the aforementioned trio who all sit in the top-15 of the individual standings following the first day of action.

Garewal, a graduate transfer from Davidson College, is tied for second at 4-under 66-72--138. He was lights out in his opening round carding a 5-under 66 with seven birdies on the card. That includes three-straight birdies on Nos. 14-16 as part of a bogey-free back nine.

Right behind his new teammate is fellow graduate transfer Julien Paltrinieri, who shot a 3-under 69-70--139 with seven combined birdies over the two rounds. The Kent State transfer is tied for fifth.

Freshman Eugenio Bernardi shook off his opening round 75 by carding a 3-under 68 in the second round and make a huge 26-spot leap in the standings. He's currently tied for 15th at 1-over 143.

Freshman Calder Overfelt (73-76--149) and senior Nolan Forsman (80-77--157) are tied for 40th and 57th, respectively.

Another freshman making his Santa Clara debut is Joey Hayden, who played the round as an individual. The Dublin, Calif. product had a big day of his own carding an even par-70-72--142 to tie for 12th. In his second round of action, Hayden shot a hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 8.

Nevada's Peyton Callens holds the individual lead at 5-under 71-66--137.

The Broncos tee of the third and final round tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. PT.
