EUGENE, Ore. - Santa Clara men's golf battled through some tough conditions this week at The Duck Invitational. After a mix of bad weather and darkness led to the second round being suspended to the start of Tuesday, the Broncos wrapped up their stay at the Eugene Country Club by turning in a 293 in the second round before wrapping up play with a 19-over 303 in the last round in which only two teams finished under par. Santa Clara finished the tournament eighth at 41-over 297-293-303--893.
Freshman Calder Overfelt had both the best final round and the shot of the day. The Newport Beach product climbed 19 spots in the final round by turning in a 1-over 72 that included an eagle on the par-5 16th. He was 2-under on the back nine and finished in a tie for 27th at 9-over 75-75-72--222.
Julien Paltrinieri finished one shot better than Overfelt to be the Broncos' top finisher of the event with a tie for 22nd (73-70-78--221). The grad transfer was 1-under in the second round with a trio of birdies.
Viraj Garewal (74-73-80--227) tied for 47th, Nolan Forsman (78-75-77--230) tied for 60th and Alex Conley (75-80-76--231) tied for 62nd to round out the Broncos lineup. Freshman Eugenio Bernardi, who was 12th after the opening round of play, tied for 41st as an individual at 13-over 72-77-77--226.
Host-Oregon took home the championship trophy with a three-round total of 2-under 287-280-283--850 as the lone team to finish under par. Oregon State's Mateo Fuenmayor and Oregon's Nate Stember shared medalist honors at 6-under 207.
