Broncos Have Strong Fall Opener With T-3rd Finish

SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara men's golf wrapped up their two-day stay at the Olympic Club with a big final day on the links at the USF Intercollegiate. The Broncos carded an even-par 284 on Tuesday to finish the event in a tie for third at 1-over 853. Graduate transfer Viraj Garewal put a stamp on his big Bronco debut with at tie for sixth individually at 3-under 210. 

The Broncos tied with LMU and was just edged out by BYU (850) for the runner-up finish. Little Rock used a 6-under final round to take the team title at 7-under 287-281-277--845.

Garewal, who opened the event with a sensational 66 in the first round, was 1-over on Tuesday as he locked down the top-three finish at 3-under 66-72-72--210. Fellow newcomer Julien Paltrinieri also impressed in his Santa Clara debut with a tie for eighth at 2-under 69-70-72--211. He too was 1-over on the day with a total of four birdies in the round. 

Freshman Eugenio Bernardi also turned heads in his collegiate debut. After carding an opening-round 75, he settled down in rounds two and three with a 68 and 71, respectively, to finish in a tie for 12th at 1-over 214. The freshman duo of Calder Overfelt and Joey Hayden (playing as an individual) tied for 27th at 5-over 218. Overfelt saved his best round for last, tallying a 2-under 69 with four birdies on the card on Tuesday. Senior Nolan Forsman shook off yesterday's 80-77 output by finishing on a high note with a 1-over 72 on Tuesday to finish 54th at 16-over. 

Nevada's Peyton Callen ran away with the individual title with a 9-under 71-66-67--204.
