Garewal In Second, Broncos Tied For Second, After Day One Of The Desert Mountain Collegiate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - All of the Broncos were hovering around scores of par today as Santa Clara men's golf posted a Round 1 score of an even 288 as they sit in a tie for second place at the Desert Mountain Collegiate. Beyond the first round, the Broncos were able to get ten holes of Round 2 in before play was suspended due to darkness.

Viraj Garewal led the Broncos today after posting a 2-under 70 with three birdies and one bogey on his card. He continued to go deeper into red digits in his second round and is 4-under currently, sitting in solo second place and two shots off the front runner. Nolan Forsman also came out strong posting a 1-under 71 and at the moment is at even par despite having a 4-hole streak of birdies in his second round. Alex Conley was not able to contribute his Round 1 score of 4-over 76 but is only one over after 12 holes of the second round.

Through his first eight holes of the day, Julien Paltrinieri was four under par but found some struggles later on in his first round to post a 2-over 74, he is 4-over in his second round. Oscar Zimmerman had a great return today as he turned in a 1-over 73 in his first round and is six over through his second round. Playing as an individual, Calder Overfelt had four birdies and four holes over par on his way to a 1-over 73 in Round 1 and is only two over after 14 holes of Round 2.

The Broncos showed up strong on the stat sheet after Day One as they lead in Par 3 and Par 5 scoring at 3.07 and 4.73, respectively. Santa Clara also leads the eagles-made category as Forsman, Conley, and Zimmerman all made 3s at the par-5 16th hole.

Mississippi State leads the field as a team at even par overall, only four shots ahead of Santa Clara. Mississippi State's Ruan Pretorius also leads the individual field as he is 6-under overall thanks to a Round 1 score of 4-under 68. Play of Round 2 will resume at 7:00 am PT tomorrow immediately followed by the Final Round of the Desert Mountain Collegiate.
