SAN FRANCISCO - Santa Clara men's golf had a solid opening round of play at the Goodwin, turning in an 8-over 288 to finish the day in a three-way tie for 17th in the crowded field of 28 that features seven teams ranked in the Golfweek poll.
The Broncos are just three strokes from cracking the top 10 where San Jose State and Saint Mary's are tied at 5-over 285. Host-No. 8 Stanford is the leader in the clubhouse at 7-under 273. The Cardinal is one of just three teams that finished under par today, joining No. 13 Oklahoma (-5) and No. 11 Georgia Tech (-3).
The individual field is even more crowded with 155 players on the course. Julian Paltrinieri turned in the low score of the day for Santa Clara at 1-over 71 and is in 15-way tie for 44th. He is just three strokes back from the top 10. Calder Overfelt and Eugenio Bernardi are one stroke behind Paltrinieri at 2-over 72 and tied for 59th while Viraj Garewal (4-over 74) and Nolan Forsman (6-over 76) are tied for 85th and 129th, respectively, to round out the Bronco lineup.
Washington's Bo Peng and Stanford's Barclay Brown are tied for the individual lead at 4-under 66.
