EUGENE, Ore. – In the first leg of the trek to the Pacific Northwest, Santa Clara men's tennis lost to Oregon 6-1 on Saturday, on the match clincher by No. 8-ranked Joshua Charlton.
Playing on court one, Charlton took down Arthur Neuhaus 6-2, 6-3 to put Oregon (5-2) up 4-0 on the team score. All matches were played out where Vasileios Ilopoulos picked up a win on court four over Luke Vandecasteele 6-3, 6-2 for the lone Broncos point.
In doubles play, Santiago Hinojosa and Jesus Tapiador Barajas quickly took care of Emmanuel Coste and Riki Oshima 6-1 on court three. However, the Broncos dropped the next two matches with Charles Roberts and Brandon Lam clinching the doubles point over the freshmen tandem of Mann Shah and Nick Cmager 6-4 on court two.
Oregon pushed their lead out with two more points when Jesper Klov-Nilsson beat Hinojosa 6-0, 6-0 on court five. That was followed by Oshima's win over Shah 6-3, 6-2 on court two before Charlton's clincher.
Santa Clara (1-4) had opportunities on courts two and six, winning the first set in both matches. On court two, the match between Tapiador Barajas and Coste went to three sets before Coste prevailed 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Lam came back to defeat Cmager 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) on court six to close out the match.
The Broncos will remain on the road to face Portland State on Sunday. First serve is at 11 a.m.
