PORTLAND, Ore. – Santiago Hinojosa had a hand in both doubles and singles wins including the match clincher to lift Santa Clara men's tennis to a 5-2 road win over Portland State on Sunday.
With Santa Clara (2-4) up 3-2, Hinojosa beat Otto Holtari in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 on court five to give the Broncos a weekend split, after losing at Oregon the day before.
Hinojosa teamed up with Jesus Tapiador Barajas to get the ball rolling for the Broncos winning their doubles match over Holtari and Nikola Dimitrijevic 6-0 on court three.
The Vikings (0-3) pulled even on court one, but the freshmen tandem of Nick Cmager and Mann Shah ousted Matteo Fortini and Majeed Bukhari 7-5 to clinch the doubles point.
The singles action went back and forth. Portland State evened the team score at 1-all when Tommy Edwards handled Tapiador Barajas 7-5, 6-3 on court two but Vasileios Ilopoulos put the Broncos ahead 2-1 with his 6-3, 6-1 win over Sam Roberts on court four.
Portland State once again pulled even when Fortini took care of Arthur Neuhaus on court one, 6-4, 7-5.
Shah earned his second win of the afternoon when he needed three sets to depose Dimitrijevic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to give Santa Clara a 3-2 advantage.
In an extra doubles match, the Bronco duo of Ryan Ali and Matthew Rodriguez beat Sahal Bukary and Ryan Nakajima, 6-4.
