Four Women’s Tennis Players Advance to Round of 32 at ITA Northwest Regional Championships

STANFORD, Calif.Elvena Gevargiz and Maddie Pothoff advanced to the round of 32 in both singles and doubles in the opening day at the ITA Women's Northwest Regional Championships inside Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday.   
 
The doubles team of Nadine Del Carmen and Caitlyn Frankel also made it to the round of 32, putting a total of four Broncos in that round in the biggest fall tournament for the Broncos.   
 
The regional doubles champions and regional singles champions and finalists qualify for the season-ending Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.  
 
Santa Clara took two out of three doubles matches on the day with Gevargiz and Pothoff deposing Portland's Jelena Lukic and Emily Soares, 8-4.   Del Carmen and Frankel beat Seattle's Martina Asciuto and Hannah Grossman, 8-3.  
 
Gevargiz and Pothoff will next face San Jose State's Savannah Sendar and Rozalina Youseva with Del Carmen and Frankel playing Gonzaga's Kate Ketels and Vlada Medvedcova in the round of 32.  First serve for both matches are scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m.   
 
In singles action, the Broncos got opening round wins from the same foursome of Gevargiz, Del Carmen, Frankel and Pothoff.
 
Gevargiz beat Jillian Rasmussen of Seattle, 6-4, 6-2, in the round of 128 and followed up with a three-set win over San Francisco's Emily Maxfield, 6-4, 0-6, 6-0.  She will face Pacific's Klara Kosan at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.  
 
Del Carmen took care of Portland State's Gerda Upeniece in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round before falling to Gonzaga's Catherine Broerman, 6-0, 6-4.  
 
Frankel knocked off Seattle's Hannah Gianan 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 but lost to Cal's Alexis Nelson, 6-1, 6-2.  
 
Playing late in the day, Pothoff defeated Alisa Sabotic of Seattle, 6-1, 7-5, before beating Washington's Ashley Chang, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.  Cal's Katerina Stloukalova awaits her next on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
