SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Lloyd Pierce helped the United States claim the gold medal for the men's baseketball team at the Tokyo Olympics.
The former Santa Clara men's basketball player was one of the assistant coaches under head coach Gregg Popovich. Behind 29 points from Kevin Durant and 19 apiece from Jayson Tatum and Bam Adebayo, the Americans downed France, 87-82, to claim the fourth-straight gold medal for the U.S.
Pierce was among an elite coaching staff as he was joined by assistants Steve Kerr, an NBA champion as a head coach with Golden State and player with Chicago, and Jay Wright, who has directed Villanova to a pair of NCAA Championships.
Just starting his first season as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers, Pierce spent two-plus seasons (2018-21) as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He spent the previous 11 seasons as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers.
Pierce was a member of the Santa Clara 1995 and 1996 teams which reached the NCAA Tournament. Following his graduation in 1998, he played professionally for four seasons.
