Highlights
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The season opened with a bang for No. 2 Santa Clara women's soccer in a 3-0 win over San Jose State Thursday night at Stevens Stadium. It was the first home match with fans in attendance since 2019 and the team fed off the energy in the stadium.
The Broncos (1-0) showed why they're the defending champions, proving overwhelming on offense against a gritty Spartans (0-1) team. Santa Clara fired off 29 shots with 13 going on frame. They hit the woodwork three times on the night and created plenty of other dangerous chances.
They also showed off their impressive depth. A total of 23 players saw minutes with a pair of starters from last year's NCAA Tournament run coming off the bench.
San Jose State got tremendous work from its goalkeepers Autumn Monty and Shayla Sugai, who each played a half, to keep the match from getting out of hand. Monty got the starting nod and made three saves while allowing two goals. In the second half, Sugai looked tremendous, coming up with seven saves. They also had to play down one after a red card was issued to Karlee Pottoroff in the 51st minute.
In net for the Broncos, Marlee Nicolos was faced with four shots, three on frame, and made some nice saves to pick up the clean sheet.
NOTES
- Santa Clara is now 18-0 all-time against San Jose State.
- Colby Barnett and Karly Reeves made their collegiate debuts and Lucy Mitchell and Alyssa Bourgeois made their Santa Clara debuts.
- Kelsey Turnbow continued her climb up Santa Clara's all-time lists with her 47th career goal. She remains in sixth place, behind No. 5 Mikka Hansen and her 52 goals. The two points put Turnbow at 118, No. 8 behind Leslie Osborne's 122.
