PALO ALTO, Calif. – In a battle of the past two National Champions, No. 11 Santa Clara women's soccer took an early lead but couldn't hold on and fell at No. 10 Stanford 3-1 Sunday evening at Cagan Stadium.

Both teams created chances with the defense and goalkeepers on each side stepping up when needed. In the end, the Broncos (3-3-2) put eight of their 11 shots on target while the Cardinal (6-2) finished with seven of 10 on frame.

In net, Katie Meyer came up with six saves for Stanford with Santa Clara keeper Kylie Foutch making three.

After a goal from Izzy D'Aquila in the second minute, Santa Clara held a lead until the 36th when Stanford made it 1-all. Andrea Kitahata slipped a ball though to Katie Duong near the top of the box that left Duong alone with the keeper Kylie Foutch and she finished right through the legs.

Things were even until a corner kick in the 75th led to Stanford's second goal. Duong took the corner and Amy Sayer knocked it in with her head on the fly to put the Cardinal on top 2-1.

Santa Clara's offense continued to push forward, getting off four shots and drawing three corners but the equalizer never came.

As they pushed forward, Stanford was able to add a third goal off the foot of Maya Doms in the 84th.

• Santa Clara is now 20-24-8 all-time against Stanford.
• Kelsey Turnbow remains in sixth place in career goals with 49, behind No. 5 Mikka Hansen and her 52 goals. She is 10th all-time at Santa Clara with 28 assists. Next is Osborne with 34. Turnbow is also at 124 points, which is seventh. Next is Aly Wagner's 127.
