SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the second year in a row, Santa Clara women's soccer has a finalist for the Honda Award. Kelsey Turnbow is joined by BYU's Mikayla Colohan, Florida State's Jaelin Howell, and Rutgers' Gabby Provenzano as finalists. Last year, teammate Alex Loera took home the honor.
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 46 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2022 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network.
The soccer finalists were selected by a panel of coaches and experts from the United Soccer Coaches Association. The Honda Sport award winner for soccer will be announced later this week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.
Turnbow led Santa Clara in goals (11), assists (12), and points (34). She also had a team-leading five game-winning goals, including in the national quarterfinals at Duke. The senior was named First Team All-West Region and All-WCC for the fifth time this season while also taking home First Team All-America honors.
She finished her Santa Clara career in fifth place all-time at Santa Clara with 56 goals and 150 points. Her 38 assists are tied for fourth. She is one of just six Broncos to reach the 25 goal-25 assist plateau.
Her play the last two season helped the Broncos to back-to-back College Cup appearances and the 2020 National Championship.
Turnbow is also a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
The Broncos have four previous Honda Award winners: Brandi Chastain in 1990, Aly Wagner in 2001, Leslie Osborne in 2004, and Loera in 2021.
The CWSA, entering its 46th year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its partnership in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.4 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs.
