No. 2 Women's Soccer Battles To 1-1 Draw at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer's first road test of the season was a physical battle at Cal that ended in a 1-1 draw Sunday evening.

The Broncos (1-0-1) managed the better chances in the second half and both overtime periods but couldn't find the match-winner. In the end, they outshot the Bears (1-0-1) 18-11 with an 8-4 edge in shots on target.

Cal goalkeeper Makena Smith made an incredible save in the first overtime period on a shot by Kaile Halvorsen to keep the Broncos out of the back of the net and had another nice one in the second as Santa Clara was applying the pressure. She finished the day with seven saves.

On the other side, Marlee Nicolos made three saves.

Kelsey Turnbow got her team on the board first in the 11th minute. Some nifty footwork beat a defender in the box and she hit a shot off the left post and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

In the 36th minute, the Santa Clara defense failed to clear a ball in the box and Abby Borchers took advantage by tying the score at 1-all.
