Men’s Golf Opens the Season Against Stanford

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – It's been a long wait but Santa Clara men's golf will participate in its first competition of the season on Monday.

The Broncos will remain close by, meeting Stanford in a dual match at its home course.

All 10 members of the Santa Clara roster will take part in the one-day event which features the debut of first-year head coach Andrew Larkin.

Matt McCarty, a preseason All-West Coast Conference selection, returns for his fifth season. He has a 71.63 career scoring average, including a team-best 71.19 in seven events last season.

Jack Avrit, Berk Harvey and Zack Kaneshiro make up the remainder of the senior class and have extensive playing experience, having appearing in at least 18 career tournaments apiece. In addition, junior Konrad Brauckmeyer played in all seven tournaments and sophomore Alex Conley six last season.

"The senior leadership on this team has been exceptional," said Larkin, who spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at UCLA. Our veterans have led by example and the set the expectations for the team this season. The work they have done on and off the course during this season will be a big reason this team takes the next step forward this season.

The Broncos returned to campus the third week of January and following a COVID-19 quarantine period returned to the links.

"The team has put in a couple great weeks of work to prepare for the start of the season," said Larkin. "We did as much as we could to replicate what our first few tournaments are going to be like. Our guys have put in a lot of work to identify weak areas of their game and take the steps necessary to tighten them up before competition."

Tee times are set for 8 a.m. on the Stanford golf course. Four foursomes from each team will then square off at 1 p.m. Follow the scoring on Golfstat.com.

Following the retirement of longtime head coach Rob Miller last spring, Larkin was hired in May after helping lead the Bruins to three NCAA Regional appearances.

"I couldn't be more excited to begin the season and see what this team is capable of," said Larkin, a finalist for the 2019 Jan Strickland Outstanding Assistant Coach Award. "It's been a long wait to get this team in competition and they have put in the work to succeed. I have no doubt that whatever this season brings, this team will grow and the wait will have been worth it."
