Men’s Golf Tied for Sixth After Opening Round of Bandon Dunes Championship

BANDON, Ore.Jack Avrit's best round of the year and Berk Harvey's continued strong start to the season has Santa Clara men's golf in a tie for sixth after the opening round of the Bandon Dunes Championship.

Avrit is one shot off the lead after firing a 4-under-par 67 on Sunday at the 14-team event which is being held at Bandon Trails Golf Course. He had four birdies and no bogeys, and is tied for fourth with two others.

Harvey, who was tied for ninth at last week's Sacramento State Invitational, is one shot back of Avrit in a tie for seventh.

Tyler Schafer of Long Beach State, Mitchell Schow of Utah and Nate Stember of Oregon are atop the leaderboard at 5-under.

The Broncos are at even-par 288. Utah and San Francisco are tied for first at 10-under.

Alex Conley is tied for 31st at even-par and Zack Kaneshiro shot a 77 and is tied for 68th. Matt McCarty is one shot back of Kaneshiro in a tie for 74th.

Playing as an individual, Oscar Zimmerman is tied for 76th at 5-over.

"Overall it was a decent start by the team," Santa Clara head coach Andrew Larkin said. "It was great to see Jack post a clean scorecard and great round to open. The guys positioned themselves well despite not having our best and are looking forward to a good test with weather coming in tomorrow."

The teams will play 18 holes on Monday and again on Tuesday. There is a shotgun start of 8:30 a.m. each day. Following scoring on Golfstat.com.
