HENDERSON, Nev. - Santa Clara men's golf had improved play in Friday's second round of the West Coast Conference Championship, but that performance did not help it ascend the leaderboard.

The Broncos shot a 4-under 284 and remains in seventh place at 2-under 574 through 36 holes of the three-day event which is being held at Reflection Bay Golf Club.

Santa Clara combined to shoot 9-under on the front nine of the second round, but was not able to maintain that pace. But its final total was still six shots better than Thursday's opening round when the Broncos ended in seventh place.

No. 8-ranked Pepperdine remains comfortably in the lead with a 35-under total of 541. BYU is second at 20-under 556 and San Francisco third (17-under). The Waves 16-under total was the best of the field in the second round.

Jack Avrit leads the way for the Broncos at 2-under 142 which has him tied for 16th. His second-round 2-under 70 featured eight birdies and an eagle, but that was offset by three holes with at least a double bogey.
