STANFORD, Calif. – Matt McCarty's top-10 finish highlighted the performance of Santa Clara men's golf at The Goodwin, a three-day tournament at Stanford.
McCarty, who entered Saturday's final round two shots off the lead, posted a 3-under-par 207 (68-66-73) to finish in a tie for ninth place.
A second-round push had the Broncos in a tie for 11th heading into the final 18 holes, but they finished in 18th with a total of 28-over 868 (291-284-293) in the 28-team field which competed on the par-70 Stanford Golf Course.
Playing in its second event of the week, Santa Clara's second-round score on Friday moved it from a tie for 15th.
"Today was not the day we wanted," Santa Clara head coach Andrew Larkin said. "The team put in a lot of effort over a very long week and just didn't have much left in the tank today."
Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary's and Sam Harned of Nevada were co-medalists, ending in a tie at 10-under 200.
Hathcoat held on to his second-round lead. McCarty was fourth after the opening 36 holes.
"It was good to see Matt bounce back and have a solid event in a great field," Larkin said of his senior who was tied for 16th earlier this week at the Duck Invitational.
Arizona State, ranked No. 8 in the nation by Golfstat.com, held on to its second-round lead and bested host Stanford by eight shots with a 15-under 825.
Closing out the tournament with his two best rounds, Oscar Zimmerman was second among the Broncos with an 11-over 221 (77-72-72) to finish in a tie for 76th.
Jack Avrit was tied for 97th at 14-over 224 (71-79-74) and Alex Conley was tied for 116th at 16-over 226 (79-73-74).
Berk Harvey was right behind Conley in tie for 121st at 227 (75-73-79).
"The team will use this week as fuel to close out our remaining events in April," Larkin said.
