Men's Golf Fifth, Avrit in Top 10 at Duck Invitational

EUGENE, Ore. – Led by a top-10 showing from Jack Avrit, Santa Clara men's golf finished fifth at the Duck Invitational.

The fourth-best second round in the field on Monday improved the Broncos from eighth to fifth, but they were unable to climb the leaderboard further on Tuesday, ending the 15-team tournament at 28-over-par 880 (298-289-293), four shots back of fourth-place Washington.

Host and second-round leader Oregon was vaulted by Oregon State in the final round. The Beavers shot 8-over 860 to claim a four-shot win over the Ducks at Eugene Country Club. Boise State was third at 16-over 868.

Avrit was the top finisher for the Broncos, ending the two-day event in a tie for ninth at 4-over 217 (71-71-75). He was buoyed by a 5-under total, tied for best in the field, on the par-5 holes on the 7,039-yard course.

One of just four players in the field under par, Hugo Townsend of Boise State won the tournament with a total of 6-under 207 (71-66-70).

Matt McCarty was the next best finisher for the Broncos, posting a 7-over 220 for a tie for 16th. After struggling to an opening-round 8-over 79, McCarty's 1-under 141 (70-71) over the final 36 holes was bettered by only two golfers – Townsend and runner-up Noal Woolsey of Washington - in the field.

"This event was a full team effort," Santa Clara head coach Andrew Larkin said. "Pretty much everyone had one off day but each time the rest of the team stepped up."

Alex Conley was in the top 25 through 36 holes, but still ended up tied for 35th at 12-over 225 (75-72-78).

Berk Harvey, who finished in the top 10 in the previous two tournaments, rebounded from a second-round 83 with his best round, an even-par 71 in the final 18 holes. He was tied for 40th at 14-over 227.

Konrad Brauckmeyer rounded out the Santa Clara lineup. He finished tied for 69th at 20-over 233 (81-76-76).

"The group battled all three rounds and made the most of what we had this week. This group is trending in a great direction and I'm excited to see what we can do at Stanford."

At 12-under Santa Clara tied with Oregon State for the best score in the field on the par-3 holes over 54 holes

"That was one of our goals for the week and those were some of the hardest par-3s of the year," Larkin said.
