Men's Golf Makes A Move in Second Round of El Macero Classic

EL MACERO, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf had improvement throughout the lineup in the second round of the El Macero Classic.

The Broncos fired a 5-under 283, their second-best round of the season, on Sunday to move up two spots into a tie for fifth with Long Beach State at the 15-team event that is being held at El Macero Country Club.

Santa Clara is at even-par 576 and each of its five team members and the five playing as individuals lowered their score from Saturday's opening round.

Matt McCarty ended the day in a tie for third after posting a 4-under 68. He is four shots off the lead at 6-under 138.

Matthew Sutherland of Fresno State leads the field at 10-under 134 and Ethan Farnam of Saint Mary's is second at 7-under.

San Francisco vaulted from fourth to first with an 11-under 277. The Dons are at 14-under 562, four shots clear of second-place Saint Mary's. Host UC Davis and Fresno State are tied for third at 9-under.

Jack Avrit joins teammate McCarty in the top 20. Avrit is in a five-way tie for 18th at 1-under 143 (73-70). He finished with a flourish for the second-straight day. He went 3-under in his final six holes on Saturday and 3-under in his last four holes on Sunday.

Alex Conley had the biggest improvement from day one to two. After shooting an 80, he carded an even-par 72 and is now in a tie for 64th at 8-over. He birdied the final three holes in the second round.

"This resiliency of the team this week has been impressive," Santa Clara head coach Andrew Larkin said. "We have gotten off to tough starts in both rounds but the team never put their head down. They fought to keep themselves in this event and closed each round better than any other team in the field. A special day is coming for this team, looking forward to tomorrow."

Berk Harvey is tied for 35th and Oscar Zimmerman tied for 53rd. Harvey is at 3-over 147 (74-73) and Zimmerman at 6-over 150 (76-74).
