McCarty Leads Way for Men's Golf at PING Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah - Matt McCarty's fourth top-10 finish of the season highlighted the performance of the Santa Clara men's golf team at the PING Cougar Classic.

McCarty's blistering final-round 65 on Saturday vaulted him 20 spots into a tie for ninth with a 7-under 209.

The Broncos capped off the two-day event with their best round, but it was not enough to make a move up the leaderboard. They carded a 3-over 867 (292-295-280) to finish in 15th where they started the final 18 holes.

San Francisco won the event with total of 41-under 823, 13 shots ahead of second-place Boise State. Host BYU was third at 26-under.

Tim Widing of San Francisco and Carson Lundell of BYU were the individual co-champions at 13-under 203.

McCarty did much of his damage in the tournament on the par-5 holes where he was 7-under. He had rounds of 69-75 on Friday and carded seven birdies and no bogeys in the final round.

"Matt handled himself really well this tournament," Santa Clara head coach Andrew Larkin. "He didn't have his best stuff on day one and did enough to keep himself in it. He played a nearly flawless final round to keep a great season going and build a lot of momentum going into conference."

Jack Avrit was second among the Bronco entries. He finished in a tie for 51st at 2-over 218 (73-74-71)

Avrit was followed by Berk Harvey and Oscar Zimmerman in a tie for 68th at 5-over. Harvey had rounds of 74-73-74 and Zimmerman went 76-73-72.

Rounding the Santa Clara lineup was Nolan Forsman who was tied for 86th at 9-over 225 (77-76-72).
