Women's Basketball Hosts Final Exhibition Saturday vs. San Francisco State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off a 40-point win in the exhibition opener, Santa Clara women's basketball will play its final tune-up on Saturday at 2 p.m. vs. San Francisco State.

Last year Santa Clara shot 39.2% (694-1769) from the floor and 29.9% (121-405) from three while shooting 71.4% (396-555) from the free throw line. The Broncos averaged 40.4 rebounds per game, 13.3 assists per game, 7.0 steals per game, and 3.8 blocks per game.

Santa Clara (11-18, 5-13 WCC) will be without 46.1 points per game (70.1%) from last year's team due to graduation for injury. The Broncos top returning scorer and rebounder is Marie Bertholdt whole averaged 9.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg last season. She was second on the team with 25 blocks and started all 29 games. Taylor Berry scored 4.9 ppg and grabbed 4.1 rpg while chipping in 19 steals. Morgan McGwire scored 4.8 ppg to go with 5.1 rpg.

"I thought our defensive intensity was really good in our first exhibition game," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "The defense is always a little further along than offense and it was fun to see how we were able to put some defensive pressure on our opponent. Moving forward we still need to work on our overall grit and tenacity. We are a young team who is still working to understand what this level is all about. I like our work ethic and know that we'll get where we need to be We just need to keep working to get better one day at a time."

Santa Clara is 10-7 all-time vs. San Francisco State. In an exhibition match-up between the two teams last year, the Broncos came away with an 87-41 win.

Last season San Francisco State (1-25) shot 35.0% (537-1535) from the field and 26.1% (155-593) from beyond the arc. The Gators were outrebounded by an average of 44.8-29.0 and had a 0.73 assist to turnover ratio.

San Francisco State lost its top three scorers and rebounders from a year ago and return just three players from last year's team. Brittaney Allison leads the returners with 7.4 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.9 apg, and 1.3 spg. She appeared in 24 games and made 18 starts while averaging 28.0 minutes per game. Jen Garcia and Brooke Shimazaki are the other two returners and averaged 0.7 and 0.4 ppg respectively. Shimazaki played in 21 games with three starts while Garcia played in just seven games and made one start.
