Women’s Basketball Rolls Past San Francisco State, 71-42, in Exhibition Game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Forward Marie Bertholdt, one of four players in double figures, scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, helping lead the Santa Clara women's basketball team to a convincing 71-42 victory over San Francisco State in a Saturday afternoon exhibition contest.

Forward Morgan McGwire posted 13 points and freshman guard Savanna Hanson added 12 and eight assists for the Broncos who pulled away from the Gators late in the third quarter.

"We came out kind of sluggish but I loved our intensity in the second half," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "We showed a great deal of aggressiveness on both ends of the floor which is how we would like to play. We still need to work to play more consistently, but I really like our team and am excited for the season to officially be under way."

San Francisco State cut a 17-point halftime deficit to 45-35 with 1:28 left in the third, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Hanson, the only two for the Broncos in the team's second exhibition game, started a 15-0 run that ended five minutes later on a McGwire bucket.

Santa Clara dominated in the paint, holding a 50-32 edge in rebounds and connecting on 21 of 31 free throws, including 8 of 10 by Bertholdt who was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor.

Lori Parkinson chipped in 10 points and had all three of Santa Clara's blocks. Taylor Berry had nine points and a game-high nine steals as the Broncos forced the Gators into 32 turnovers.

Freshman guard Lauryn Catching led San Francisco State with 11 points and forward Naila Washington added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Gators shot just 27.1 percent from the field, including a 5-for-26 effort (19.2 percent) in the first half.

San Francisco State closed an eight-point the gap to 18-15 with 6:57 left in the second quarter on a layup by Washington, but Parkinson hit a layup and Bertholdt converted a three-point play in a 27-second span to ignite a 15-2 run to end the half.

The Broncos held San Francisco State, which plays in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, to just two field goals in the final 11 minutes of the first half.
