Women's Basketball Wins Season Finale at Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. – In the last game of the regular season, Santa Clara women's basketball beat Pacific 66-60 on Saturday afternoon on the road.

The Broncos finish the regular season with their most wins since also winning 22 in 1998-99. That season they advanced to the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The 13 conference wins ties the most in program history. The only other time the Broncos won 13 WCC games was in 1990-91 when they won the conference.

"I am so proud f our team for the way we played today," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "It may not have been the prettiest win but Pacific is a very talented team and Stockton is a tough place to play. I believe this game really helps prepare you for the conference tournament where everything has to be earned and every team is battling."

With the score going back and forth through much of the third quarter, Santa Clara (22-7, 13-5 WCC) finally took the lead for good with a 3-pointer by Savanna Hanson with eight minutes to go in the game.

The Tigers (13-16, 6-12 WCC) went ice cold from the floor in the final five minutes of the game, shooting just 1 of 13, including missing their final eight shots.

The Broncos responded by going 4 of 4 from the field during the final minutes of the game.

Santa Clara dominated on the inside, outscoring Pacific 34-10 in points in the paint.

Marie Bertholdt led the Broncos with 24 points and five rebounds.

Morgan McGwire scored 18 to go with nine rebounds and Devin Hudson scored 11 with five boards.

Pacific got a game-high 28 from Hailie Eackles who was 6 of 13 from beyond the arc and 8 of 9 from the free throw line.

No other Tiger scored more than six but Emily Simons grabbed eight rebounds.

With 5:10 to go in the first half, the Broncos held a 26-22 lead but Pacific would follow with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes. Hailie Eackles led the way with back-to-back 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

After trailing for nearly 10 minutes beginning at the end of the first half, the Broncos rattled off an 8-0 run to get back on top 37-35 before battling back and forth.

Santa Clara returns to action at the West Coast Conference tournament vs. Gonzaga on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Las Vegas.
