SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the first time in 10 years the Santa Clara women's basketball team is headed to the postseason. The Broncos will play at Fresno State at 7 p.m. Friday in the WNIT.

The last postseason for Santa Clara (23-8, 13-5 WCC) was in 2005-06 when the Broncos went 19-12 and fell in the first round of the WNIT to Oregon State.

"We are honored and humbled to be invited to play in the WNIT," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "Fresno State is a team with a lot of postseason experience and the Save Mart Center is a fun and exciting place to play. We are thrilled for the opportunity to play again and can't wait to get to work."

The Broncos earned their bid with the most wins since 1997-98 when they also won 23 and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. That season Santa Clara won the WCC regular season and WCC tournament championships.

Their 13 conference wins tied the most in program history with the 1990-91 season when they won the conference.

Santa Clara had impressive resume. The Broncos beat No. 13/10 Stanford, Texas Tech and Gonzaga twice during the 2015-16 campaign.

The wins over Stanford and Texas Tech gave the Broncos two wins over Power Five conference opponents in the same season for the first time since 2000-01.

With two wins over Gonzaga the Broncos snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Zags. It was also the first time they beat Gonzaga twice in a season since 2002-03.
