Bertholdt's Career Day Leads Women's Basketball Over Pepperdine

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the Think Pink game, Santa Clara women's basketball beat Pepperdine 84-50 on Saturday afternoon.

Marie Bertholdt set career highs with 27 points and 15 rebounds. She also had career-bests with three 3-pointers and seven assists.

"Marie was so good tonight," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "You wish you had 10 players like her on your team because she plays her heart out every possession. It's so cool to see her rewarded with this type of production."

Lori Parkinson also added a double- double (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Morgan McGwire and Taylor Berry each scored 15.

"Morgan is one of our better shooters," said Payne. "It's nice to have her versatility and have her play inside and out. It's great when we have multiple players looking to be aggressive like we did tonight."

The Broncos came out and dominated from the tip. After a 7-0 run to start the game, they went on a 19-2 run over five minutes to build a 26-7 lead with 2:42 left in the opening period.

Their defense was swarming, forcing 13 Waves turnovers and picking up 11 steals in the opening quarter.

In all, Santa Clara (21-6, 12-4 WCC) collected 20 steals and dominated on the boards with a 46-25 advantage. They also held a 32-4 advantage in second chance points.

"We are always looking to play aggressive defense and dominate on the boards," said Payne. "We were able to win the hustle battles today and that was a really good sign for our team and who we want to be."

Pepperdine (6-22, 2-15 WCC) committed 27 turnovers as a team and shot just 23.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Allie Green led the team with 18 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the floor but committed eight turnovers.

No other Wave was in double figures and Keitra Wallace's six rebounds led the team.

After an ugly second quarter that saw just 15 total points scored, the Broncos came out to start the second half and went on a 10-2 run to get on top 45-24. They continued their dominance throughout the final period.

"We got a little hesitant there in the second quarter after a couple shots didn't go in," said Payne. "We told the team that if they had their feet set, to just shoot the ball and let it fly. We did a much better job of that in the second half."

Santa Clara returns to action Thursday at 6 p.m. vs. Saint Mary's for senior day. The winner of that game will have the inside track on second place in the WCC standings.
