Two Double-Doubles Lead Women's Basketball Over Hope International

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Looking to continue its winning ways, Santa Clara women's basketball topped Hope International 78-54 on Sunday afternoon in Leavey. The Broncos have won seven in a row for their longest winning streak since also winning seven straight from Dec. 1, 2007-Jan. 4, 2008.

Marie Bertholdt and Morgan McGwire both had double-doubles for Santa Clara (7-2). McGwire led all players with 20 points and 16 rebounds while Bertholdt scored 12 with 14 boards. Dru Toleafoa (12), Taylor Berry (11), and Savanna Hanson (11) all scored in double figures for the Broncos.

Marissa Rendon led Hope International (4-1) with 18 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and Nikki Andaya scored 16.

"We didn't feel like we were playing our type of basketball today. We like to play gritty and tough and I didn't think we were playing in that way but I'm glad to get the win for sure," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "We knew Hope International would be a tougher test than the other day. They've played some Division I schools already and beaten a couple. We were doing some things differently defensively so that we could get some work for when we need them later in the year."

The Broncos used an 11-0 run over a minute and a half in the third to take the biggest lead of the game at 53-37. Ashley Carter-Wafer finally got the Royals on the board with a jumper at the 2:17 mark but Santa Clara had control at the end of the third 54-42.

Santa Clara started the second half on a 6-0 run to get the lead to double-digits but Hope International would fight back again and with 5:16 to go in the third quarter the Broncos led 42-37.

The Broncos started the game on a 6-0 run behind a pair of threes from Hanson. After a bucket for the Royals, Santa Clara scored another six straight behind a pair of jumpers from Berry. The quarter ended with Santa Clara on top 19-13.

Hope International came out in the second quarter and got the game within one on a three by Rendon and a layup from Arin Perry. The Broncos came back with a 7-0 run over a minute and a half to build the lead back out to eight.

The Royals kept the game close and a three from Perry with 2:46 left in the opening half made the score 30-27. Santa Clara went to the locker room with a 35-29 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Hope International was unable to get closer than 56-46 at the 8:28 mark. Santa Clara scored the final seven points of the game to close out the 24-point win.

Santa Clara returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. vs. Texas Tech in Leavey.
