Women's Basketball Goes for Program Best 13th Straight Win Saturday at Gonzaga

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball looks to set a program record with its 13th consecutive victory Saturday at 2 p.m. at Gonzaga. The Broncos tied the team's record with their 12th win in a row at Portland on Thursday.

The only other time the Broncos had a winning streak of 12 games was when from Jan. 4-Feb. 9, 1991. That season they won the WNIT.

Its 12-2 start is the best for Santa Clara since also beginning the 2001-02 season 12-2.

Santa Clara (12-2, 3-0 WCC) is outscoring teams 68.3-56.2 and outrebounding opponents 41.8-31.6. The Broncos shoot 41.3 percent (342 of 828) from the field and have hit 49 3-pointers. Their defense forces 24.9 turnovers per game and the team collects 13.8 steals per game.

Morgan McGwire leads the team with 12.9 points per game and is first in the conference while shooting 55.0 percent (77 of 140) from the field. She is tied for the team lead with 6.5 also has 6.5 rpg and is second with 11.2 ppg. She is tied with McGwire with 16 blocks. Savanna Hanson's 2.5 assists per game leads the Broncos and she is scoring 9.6 ppg with 14 3-pointers to lead the team. She is also second in the WCC with 36 steals and 2.6 per game. Taylor Berry leads the WCC with 2.7 steals per game and is scoring 7.4 ppg to go with 3.3 rpg. Her 38 total steals are also No. 15 nationally.

Santa Clara is 27-33 all-time vs. Gonzaga with the first meeting coming in 1987-88. Last year the Zags won both matchups against the Broncos.

Gonzaga (11-4, 3-0 WCC) is outscoring opponents 65.5-53.9 and outrebounding teams 42.1-32.3. The Bulldogs are shooting 41.2 percent (358 of 869) from the field and 34.3 percent (87 of 254) from beyond the arc. After losing at Washington State on Dec. 8, the Zags have won five in a row.

Jill Barta leads the team with 10.9 ppg and adds 5.4 rpg. Shelby Cheslek leads Gonzaga with 8.8 rpg and is scoring 10.5 ppg on 54.7 percent (64 of 117) shooting from the field. She is averaging 2.0 blocks per game as well. Emma Stach has made a team-high 23 3-pointers and is scoring 8.4 ppg. Georgia Stirton scores 6.6 ppg and leads the Bulldogs with 2.9 apg.
