Women's Basketball Back in Action for Three Games This Week

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Coming off its fourth-straight win, Santa Clara women's basketball returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at UC Santa Barbara. The Broncos then return home to face Simpson Friday at 6 p.m. and Hope International Sunday at 2 p.m. Last week Santa Clara knocked off No. 13/10 Stanford and won the Cal Poly/Share SLO Holiday Tournament with wins over Cal Poly and Evansville.

Santa Clara (4-2) is scoring 60.2 points per game this season on 36.8% (123-334) shooting from the field. The Broncos are outrebounding teams 39.2-34.7 and forcing 25.2 turnovers. They are picking up 13.3 steals per game and dishing out 11.8 assists per game as well.

"I proud the team's efforts this weekend," said Santa Clara head coach JR Payne. "We made some good adjustments over the weekend against two good teams. Playing two different style teams like that can be tough but we were able to win both games."

Morgan McGwire, the co-WCC Player of the Week, leads Santa Clara with 10.7 ppg on 49.0% (25-51) shooting from the field and has added 5.2 rpg and 1.3 spg. Savanna Hanson is scoring 10.5 ppg and leads the team with 2.1 apg. She is grabbing 3.3 rpg to go with 2.3 spg. Lori Parkinson is tops on the Broncos with 6.5 rpg and is scoring 8.5 ppg. Taylor Berry is averaging a team-high 3.8 spg while scoring 6.5 ppg and grabbing 3.7 rpg.

The Gauchos (1-6) are being outscored on the season 473-394 and outrebounded 274-238. They are shooting 38.1% (144-378) from the field and 26.4% (29-110) from 3-point land. UC Santa Barbara is turning the ball over 19.6 times per game while dishing out 11.0 apg.

"Santa Barbara is a much-improved ball club from last season," said Payne. "They are very athletic and have a balanced scoring attack both inside and out. They are also very well coached so they will be a good challenge for us."

Makala Roper is the lone Gaucho averaging double figures (12.9 ppg) while adding 2.0 apg and 1.7 rpg. Kali Jones is leads the team with 6.1 rpg and is scoring 7.7 ppg on 51.1% (24-47) shooting from the floor. Onome Jemerigbe leads UC Santa Barbara with 2.1 apg and adds 4.6 ppg.

This will be the first meeting between Santa Clara and Simpson.

The Red Hawks (1-7) have been outscored 593-506 and outrebounded 334-292. They are shooting 38.2% (187-490) from the field and 25.9% (41-158) from three.

Three players are averaging double figures for Simpson. Esther Wofford leads the way with 14.1 ppg and is second on the team with 7.1 rpg. Kelsie Jurin scores 13.6 ppg and leads the team with 2.9 apg. Whitney Rodriguez scores 11.9 ppg and leads the way with 7.4 rpg.

This will be the first meeting between Santa Clara and Hope International.

The Royals (4-1) have outscored opponents 344-298 and outrebounded teams 226-220. They are shooting 43.2% (136-315) from the field and 29.7% (22-74) from beyond the arc.

Marissa Rendon leads the team with 13.4 ppg on 47.1% (24-51) shooting from the field and is tied for the team-lead with five threes made. She is second on the team with 5.6 rpg and is tied for the lead with 3.2 apg. Jazzmyn Oliver is tops on the roster with 6.0 rpg and is scoring 8.8 ppg to go with 1.6 bpg. Alexis Perry scores 11.8 ppg with 3.0 rpg and 3.2 apg.
