SAN JOSE, Calif. – Two of the next three Women's Soccer College Cups will be held down the street from Santa Clara University at Avaya Stadium, hosted by the West Coast Conference. On Tuesday, Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith was one of three local coaches to take part in a press conference announcing the beginning of ticket sales.
"Coaching in the College Cup is one of the most exciting things you can do," Smith said. "I've been lucky enough to coach in 10 College Cups. To be able to coach in the College Cup here at Avaya Stadium – a great soccer stadium – a stadium that I'm in for every Quakes home game, that's a dream come true. To have this game, should we be able to play in the College Cup, in our backyard would be a chance for the local community to come out and support a local team."
The last time the College Cup was held at Avaya in 2016, the Broncos came a game away from making it, falling 1-0 at Georgetown in the national quarterfinals. They will be looking to make the 11th College Cup in program history in 2019 and begin the year ranked No. 13 in the nation.
Also present were the head coaches of Stanford and San Jose State.
"I think for the City of San Jose to host this event is pretty phenomenal," said San Jose State University women's soccer head coach Lauren Hanson. "Just from my own memories as a player, we had the opportunity to play here in San Jose for the College Cup and the Final Four. It was an everlasting memory for me. It's a special moment in my career, personally as a player. I know as a coach, for your team and for your program, it's an unbelievable opportunity."
"It's a dream to play in the College Cup," said Stanford University women's soccer head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "It's the biggest stage for us in the biggest event of the year. If you can play at home in front of all your friends and family, I think it'd be a remarkable experience, so we really have added incentive to try and get to the College Cup. Avaya Stadium is obviously an unbelievable venue to play in, so I think it'd be a dream for all of us to get here."
WCC commissioner Gloria Nevares was also at the event.
"First of all, Bay Area and San Jose, are so very proud of this venue and everything that women's soccer and college soccer is to this area," Nevares said. "When we hosted a couple years ago, it was such a tremendous statement to have the event on the West Coast. We're just so excited to have it again in this venue in the Bay Area."
The NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament includes 64 teams that qualify by winning their respective conference tournament, claiming the conference regular season championship, or earning an at-large bid based on their regular season performance. Those 64 teams are divided into four sectional brackets, with the winner of each bracket reaching the NCAA Women's College Cup at Avaya Stadium.
Tickets for the 2019 NCAA Women's College Cup at Avaya Stadium in San Jose go on sale to the general public on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. The tournament's two semifinal matches will take place on Friday, Dec. 6 and the final will take place on Sunday, Dec. 8. Tickets will grant access to all three matches.
Tickets can be purchased here or by calling 800-745-3000. Groups of 10 or more can purchase discounted tickets by calling the Earthquakes Front Office at 408-556-7700.
