Huge Second Half Lifts No. 24 Women's Soccer Over San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A second half onslaught lifted No. 24 Santa Clara women's soccer to a 6-0 win at home over San Diego Saturday afternoon.

Despite being scoreless at the half, the Broncos (8-5-1, 2-0-1 WCC) came out and scored five goals in under 15 minutes to start the second with the first coming just 28 seconds in.

Maddy Gonzalez led the way with a pair of goals and Kelsey Turnbow, Kelcie Hedge, Alex Loera, and Nicole Sweeney all added a goal. Machaela George also had three assists with Turnbow, Natalie Kennedy, Audrey Hegardt, and Cianna Elmazaj all adding one.

Right out of the break, George sent a long through ball right to the feet of Hedge who took a few touches before finishing low and inside the far post.

Minutes later Santa Clara added another. Kennedy found George in the box who centered one to Gonzalez and she knocked her shot into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game in the 50th.

Loera then made it 3-0 in the 58th. Hegardt took a free kick and found Loera who dribbled to 25 yards out before blasting a perfect shot into the upper-right corner of the net.

Turnbow added a goal Olimpico two minutes later in the 60th. Her corner kick bounced off the post and went in for a 4-0 lead.

Gonzalez added her second 42 seconds later to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead. George passed to Turnbow who found Gonzalez inside the six-yard box and she one-timed her shot.

Just for good measure, the Broncos added one more. Elmazaj crossed a pass to Sweeney who headed the ball in. it was the first career goal for Sweeney and the first career assist for Elmazaj.
