Overtime Thriller Sends No. 20 Women's Soccer Past Cal in NCAA Tournament's Opening Round

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer moved on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an exciting 1-0 overtime win over Cal Saturday afternoon at Stevens Stadium.

The Broncos (14-5-2) and Bears (13-5-3) were even in the first half but Santa Clara took over in the second, outshooting Cal 12-1 and 7-0 in shots on frame but were denied every time until Julie Doyle blasted a shot into the back of the net in the 91st minute.

The goal was setup by a nice play from Audrey Hegardt who was able to poke a ball in traffic right to Doyle. Doyle then took some touches to get just outside the box before rifling a shot into the upper-right corner of the goal for the game-winner.

Up to that point, Angelina Anderson had been tremendous, making seven saves on the day, including two where she just tipped the ball outside the goal.

Anderson also got some help from her defense in the 50th minute when a header from Kelcie Hedge was ticketed for the goal but a Cal defender saved it off the line to keep the game scoreless.

Sophie Whitehouse got the start in net for Santa Clara and made two saves, both of the spectacular variety. In the span of less than two and a half minutes early on, Abigail Kim and Luca Deza both put shots on target, but Whitehouse was able to turn both Bears away.
