MORAGA, Calif. – No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer pushed its unbeaten streak to 10 (8-0-2) with a 2-1 win at Saint Mary's Tuesday afternoon.
Both teams converted on penalty kicks but Kelsey Turnbow's early goal gave the Broncos (12-5-2, 6-0-2 WCC) a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
In the second minute, Kelcie Hedge got a pass in the box to Turnbow who knocked it out of the air and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Santa Clara ended up holding a 15-7 advantage in shots but the Gaels (7-10-1, 1-6-1 WCC) had a 5-4 edge in shots on target.
Julie Doyle scored the penalty for Santa Clara in the 55th minute to make it 2-0. Kyllie Glock converted for the Gaels in the 72nd to cut the lead to 2-1.
Sophie Whitehouse made her second start of the season in net and finished with xxx saves.
NOTES
- Santa Clara is now 35-3-5 all-time against Saint Mary's and has a 19 match (16-0-3) unbeaten streak in the series.
- The Broncos had a 7-1 lead in shots in the second half.
- Santa Clara collected eight corner kicks while allowing one.
