SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Nonconference play came to an end for Santa Clara women's soccer with a 2-0 win over UC Riverside at Stevens Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (6-5) were in control from the start and outshot the Highlanders (2-7-1) 26-4 but put just nine of their shots on goal, keeping the game close throughout. Santa Clara also earned nine corners and didn't surrender any but couldn't take advantage of any of their set pieces.
The scoring got going early on a goal by Kelsey Turnbow in the fourth minute. Kelcie Hedge found Turnbow in the box and she finished inside the left post to make it 1-0.
The Broncos then made it 2-0 in the 28th. Skylar Smith found Kaitlyn Parcell down the left flank and her ball to the center found the foot of Maddy Gonzalez who got just enough to score the goal.
UC Riverside's first shot didn't come until a free kick just outside the box in the 65th minute. The Highlanders best scoring chance came two minutes later when Lucy Alcala had a one-on-one with Sophie Whitehouse but sent her shot wide.
White made one save in 54 minutes after coming in for starter Courtney Ogren.
Caela Kaio made seven saves on the day.
