SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer sent its seniors out in style with a 6-1 victory over San Francisco on Senior Day.
The Broncos (13-5-2, 7-0-2 WCC) fell behind right away but rallied to score a season-high tying six goals while also getting off a season-high 29 shots and putting 16 on frame. Kelsey Turnbow led the way with two goals with Izzy D'Aquila, Machaela George, Alex Loera, and Skylar Smith also scoring and D'Aquila, Kelcie Hedge, and Kaile Halvorsen adding assists.
Turnbow scored her first of the day in the ninth minute to even the game after the Dons (10-8-2, 3-5-1 WCC) had struck in the less than three minutes in. After getting around a defender, Turnbow hit a beautiful shot just under the crossbar.
In the 23rd minute, Machaela George hit a shot form 25 yards out that went just over the keeper's hands and off the bottom of the crossbar to make it a 2-1 Broncos lead.
A bad clear by San Francisco in the 49th got D'Aquila the ball just inside the top of the box and she blasted her shot into the back of the net.
The Broncos added two more goals in less than a minute to get on top 5-1. Alex Loera launched one from 25 yards out in the 68th and then D'Aquila sent a through ball to Turnbow who scored her second of the day.
Smith added the final goal in the 83rd. Halvorsen touched a pass to Kelcie Hedge who tapped the ball to Smith before she hit a shot off the hands of Olivia Camera and in.
In the third minute, Miciah Madison sent a through ball to Samantha Jehnings whose shot hit off Courtney Ogren's hand and off the crossbar before going in to make it 1-0.
The Dons ended with 12 shots and nine on goal but were held to just the one tally behind seven saves from Ogren and one from Sophie Whitehouse who both played a half.
On the other side, Camera had 10 saves.
